Size effects on spheroidal voids by Finite Fracture Mechanics and application to corrosion pits

چکیده

The present work aims at investigating the failure size effect of a spheroidal void in an infinite linear elastic solid under remote tension by means coupled Finite Fracture Mechanics (FFM) approach. opening stress field and intensity factor (SIF) annular crack surrounding cavity —necessary for FFM implementation— are obtained numerically through parametric axisymmetric finite element analyses (FEAs): spheroid aspect ratio is varied between 0.1 10 Poisson's 0.5. Accordingly, semi-analytical functions approximating concentration SIF put forward. Finally, on voids reported, predictions compared with experimental results fatigue limit arising from corrosion pits, showing fairly good agreement.

Fracture Mechanics and Corrosion Fatigue

The development and current state-of-the-art in fracture mechanics in relation to studies of environment-enhanced fatigue-crack growth (corrosion fatigue) and fatigue-crack growth per se are reviewed. Patterns of response of materials to different loading and environmental conditions are considered in terms of the probable mechanisms for environmental embrittlement. The usefulness of the fractu...

Partial Discharges in Ellipsoidal and Spheroidal Voids

Transients associated with partial discharges in voids can be described in terms of the charges induced on the terminal electrodes of the system. The relationship between the induced charge and the properties which are usually measured is discussed. The method is illustrated by applying it to a spheroidal void located in a simple disk-type GIS spacer. I N T R O D U C T I O N HE transients which...

Stochastic fracture mechanics and size effect

Quasibrittle materials such as concrete, fiber composites, rocks, tough ceramics, sea ice, dry snow slabs, wood and some biomaterials, fail at different nominal strengths with respect to their structural size. Smaller structures fail in a ductile manner which usually involves distributed cracking with strain-softening. The stress redistribution that is caused by fracture and distributed crackin...

NURBS-Based Isogeometric Analysis Method Application to Mixed-Mode Computational Fracture Mechanics

An interaction integral method for evaluating mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) for two dimensional crack problems using NURBS-based isogeometric analysis method is investigated. The interaction integral method is based on the path independent J-integral. By introducing a known auxiliary field solution, the mixed-mode SIFs are calculated simultaneously. Among features of B-spline basis...

[Proceeding] Crack deflection in brittle materials by Finite Fracture Mechanics

During their operation, modern aircraft engine components are subjected to increasingly demanding operating conditions, especially the high pressure turbine (HPT) blades. Such conditions cause these parts to undergo different types of time-dependent degradation, one of which is creep. A model using the finite element method (FEM) was developed, in order to be able to predict the creep behaviour...
